This project came in to our office in 2016 as a two storey extension to the rear of an existing property. However, just as we were about to start on site, a fire engulfed the existing building and we were back to the drawing board. Rather than see it as a negative we used this as an opportunity to re-assess the form of the building and its position within the site. The result is a contemporary twist of the original house that plays tricks with the vernacular by carving out triple height spaces from the floor plan and opening up views through the building and site. In a tongue in cheek nod to the fire the client was on board to clad the building in charred timber.
